Guthrie Douglas - product, industry and company news
Tel: 01926 452452 August 2010

Dear reader

This issue we introduce the latest Safedrive®. The 1800Nm model is the UK’s most powerful drive of its type enabling even larger doors to be motorised by the Safedrive® direct drive range.

We also look at some of the value for money benefits and additional features that come as standard with all Guthrie Douglas products. These include the fault readouts on our control panels, which could make the difference between a chargeable and non-chargeable callout.

All our customers can benefit from our expert pre-sales advice. The case study shows how we worked closely with one customer’s project team to come up with solutions to some complex challenges.

If you have any questions or topics you’d like us to cover in future issues, please email andrew.collett@guthriedouglas.com.

UK’s most powerful direct drive unit extends Safedrive® range

Safedrive®

Guthrie Douglas is proud to introduce the most powerful direct drive unit on the UK market. The 1800Nm Safedrive® means our customers can now build larger and heavier doors using a standard layout.

Up until now, when a door reached a certain size, it had to be constructed using complex equipment, such as specialist chain drives and safety brakes. Now a standard drive design can be used across an even wider range of door sizes. Chain-driven packages can be forgotten, apart from in the most exceptional circumstances or where site restrictions dictate.

The 1800Nm unit completes our Safedrive® range of drives for non counter-balanced roller shutter doors and grilles. Models are now available from just 170Nm, right up to the new 1800Nm Safedrive®.

So whatever the size of your door, there is a Safedrive® to match. And because it’s Guthrie Douglas, that means:

  • Each drive uses our standard controls. You only need to train your fitters once – if they can use one Guthrie Douglas product they can use them all
  • All our industrial door drives have digital limits and are plugged in on-site to one of our TS control panels – quick and simple installations saving you time and money
  • All commissioning is done at ground level – keeping installers safe and reducing access equipment hire
  • You get all the expertise and support you need from our technical sales team. We’ll make sure we supply the correct powered drive to suit your door.

Winning solution for stadium supplier

A major customer has put its trust in our technical excellence and product reliability for a high-profile sports stadium contract.

We supplied more than 20 drives and control systems for access and fire shutters at the East London site. These included Safedrive® units, TS958 control panels, DLA fire door drive units and safety brakes.

Our technical team overcame a number of complex challenges, including designing four different types of control system. In one example, a special program was needed to allow fire crews to access sealed-off areas during a fire alarm. In normal operation, fire shutters cannot be reopened during an alarm.

The customer also required battery back-up units so access shutters will operate in the event of a power failure.

All items were built and supplied in just a month and have already been installed.

If you have a difficult or must-not-fail project, talk to Guthrie Douglas’s technical sales team on 01926 452452.

News in brief
New radio package and current projects

Guthrie Douglas has introduced a new radio package for use with the TS range of control panels. Its plug-in connection to TS961, TS970 and TS981 control units makes it quick and easy to install – reducing on-site wiring time.

The receiver has a range of up to 100m and reliable operation even in heavily built-up areas such as car parks. The secure 433.92MHz two-channel rolling code system prevents code grabbing. For more details please contact the sales team on 01926 452452.

Who’s using our products and why?

New SiteQuick and safeRanger 91RDU variable speed drives have been fitted on four sectional doors at Southampton Airport’s fire station. The doors need to open in 15 seconds. The Ranger 91RDUs do it in just 11. The site also uses Wireless Safety Edges, addressing the end user’s safety concerns and previous poor experience of the traditional spiral cable option.

Enhanced security – Guthrie Douglas’s extensive product range and expertise will be in evidence at a high-security police station in North London. Our standard controls and a tailor-made console designed by our technical team will operate the intricate entry and exit airlock. Four shutters will each be fitted with a Safedrive® Fi to give the rapid opening time required.

International reliability – An end user in Dubai has ordered ‘the same again’ thanks to the reliability of the solution we gave for its first bus garage. Our customer is now supplying 32 sectional overhead doors for a second garage fitted with our Ranger 91 drive units and TS958 controls.

Industry comment
Repair and service – on the increase as new door installations decline?

Control Panel

Our customers are reporting a growth in repairs and service as their customers shy away from fitting new doors in the current economy. The comments come from research conducted by Guthrie Douglas with more than 150 companies.

However, this ‘make do and mend’ philosophy can mean a drop in turnover for door installers of all types. So how can we help you maximise the opportunities?

When it comes to repairs, our TS control panels could be the difference between a non-chargeable and chargeable visit. The panels record the door’s last two faults. So you can pinpoint the cause of the breakdown, even if the fault is intermittent and the door is working again when you visit.

This can help reduce your time on site and allow you to charge for callouts if the fault has been caused by improper use.

Only 15 to 20% of the UK’s industrial premises have service or maintenance programmes for their industrial doors, according to a recent report. It is also estimated that 85 to 90% of industrial buildings have no fire door maintenance or testing procedures in place either.

But if the doors have a Guthrie Douglas control panel, you can ensure the customer knows exactly when they need servicing and who to call. Just set the maintenance counter in the control panel and put your contact details in the space provided. When the counter reaches the specified number of cycles, the panel will alert the customer and they’ll have your number right to hand.
